Background

Two types of antibiotics can be used: bacteriostatic vs. bacteriocidal

Bacteriostatic antibiotics do not kill the bacteria- their mode of action is to prevent the bacteria from growing or reproducing. Once the agent is removed, bacterial growth may resume. Bacteriocidal antibiotics function by killing the bacteria.

Usage

In addition to controlling growth, bacteriostatic antibiotics has been used previously to:

  • Synchronize cell cycle of a population
  • Investigate nucleoid segregation
